Security-conscious web design & development

We design websites with security in mind & batteries included. For some websites you need to take more security measures than for others. Running a whistleblower's blog, for instance, takes much more in terms of taking care of securing the site against adversaries than running a simple blog about your favorite raspberry pie. These differences can lie in the areas of domain security and jurisdiction, patching software to remove tracking by third-parties, and many other things.

No tracking

No tracking

We specifically modify the backend software where necessary to offer the same usability, yet remove any tracking capabilities. So your visitors’ entire web history isn’t sent to Facebook or Twitter.

Profiles about your Internet behaviour most often get built by simply surfing unprotected, with your browser executing any and all JavaScript that it comes across, which usually does some data collection about your browser and operating system, which then gets sent back to third-party advertising networks who make money building profiles about every user on the internet. And when you search for something on the internet, you are revealing something very private indeed: you are revealing what you think at that very moment. What things you are likely interested in.

To prevent this kind of information about your site's visitors from being disclosed to third-parties, we specifically don't implement tracking in the sites we build, and we even patch software to remove tracking that would normally allow third-parties (or even yourself) from knowing privacy-sensitive information about your visitors.

Open source software stack

Open source software stack

We exclusively use an open source software stack to power the websites we design. This guarantees the possibility of code review, which is important to fix bugs and security vulnerabilities, and you’re not tied to one specific IT provider.

Some of the benefits of using open source are:

  • You are not tied to a single software provider.

You can easily change over to other service providers if this proves necessary. By choosing open source we are keeping you free from vendor lock-in.

  • A vast community of programmers who check for security vulnerabilities 24/7.

Because the source code is freely available, this allows programmers interested in the software to check for bugs and security vulnerabilities, and release patches for the software. This is beyond the capability of even the largest software providers, due to the scale. Security vulnerabilities generally get fixed fast.

Standards-compliant usability

Standards-compliant usability

We use the latest Web standards to build your website, ensuring maximum compatibility between devices, while at the same time optimizing your web browsing experience to the device used.

Adhering to web standards has a lot of advantages. It makes it easier to maintain your website, because of the separation between design and content. Websites are made using HTML, which is essentially a plain text markup language. If HTML were a closed source binary file format, it would be a lot harder to work with this. It can also be easily transformed into other content formats, should the need arise.

Adhering to web standards also improves your search engine rankings, since they rely on interpreting your site, and the better it adheres to the standards the better search engines are at correctly interpreting your site. It also improves accessibility with screen readers, for example.
